we finish off Season 11 with something we’ve not done before on SG… We take a look at the dark art of bootlegging (unoffical remixing). This is something that has been around for a very long time, but it’s certainly risen in popularity D&B in recent years. It’s a way of taking a piece of music that has a universal appreciation and reformatting it into a different genre’s aesthetic. Often for a new generation - giving it a new context and lease of life. It’s an opportunity for an artist to tap into their repertoire of musical loves - perhaps before they found Drum & Bass - and bring those influences along for the ride… It’s also incredibly common for new producers to start out by doing bootleg of a song they are familiar with - it’s a great way to get a feel for production & arrangement before beginning in the sometimes daunting place of totally blank canvasses. For more experienced producers: it can be a fun avenue to get your name out there too, giving DJs something interesting and fresh to play in their sets, especially during festival season, this can have almost viral effects!
