Video showing the Sony Alpha 9 III pre-capture in action. Note that this is taken in very dim conditions under the tree canopy so the image quality is quite poor at iso 20,000 as is the cameraman's ability to keep the subject in the frame. Nevertheless in such poor light you can see the A9 III's incredible subject detection, tracking and autofocus never misses a beat. Just a few frames to recover the focus on the birds eyes when the bird comes back into the frame. As a comparison the A1 would probably not detect the bird in that situation. It needs better light and more importantly much better background separation. Check my other video of the A1 capturing a lorikeet in similar situation - no pre-capture so first frame is when the bird is in the air. Note: 1 . The camera is in shutter priority - AF mode - so shutter will only fire is the camera is in focus, even the tail being in focus counts ! 2. The buffer becomes full towards the end and so a few frames are missed. To avoid hitting a full buffer too early you can reduce the pre-capture time or reduce the frame rate.
