Gene Autry, the iconic singing cowboy and singer of seemingly endless Christmas songs for children, from Frosty the Snowman down to Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, singing a labor protest song to celebrate Mary Harris "Mother" Jones, American labor organizer and co-founder of the Industrial Workers of The World. The generation who knew the realities of the Great Depression is disappearing, along with World War II veterans. There was a different reality in this country in 1931, and the western and southern states were particularly hard hit. This song comes from a gritty reality not much remembered today.
