How did the 'American Dream' turn into a living nightmare for the poor in 19th Century New York? The rich mansions of Manhattan became poor tenement slums. In this video, the first in a series on New York's slums, Jacob Riis (a social reformer) describes the genesis of its tenements: how immigration and trade resulted in the mansions of Manhattan becoming partitioned into overcrowded boarding houses and gardens filled with yet more rooms to rent. Within the constraints of a 25 by 100 foot lot, maximum densities were sought– crammed from cellar to garret with the poor. Accommodation was mean, filthy and overpriced.
