When I was given this video, I didn’t realize the emotional rollercoaster I was about to go on. I’m what most would call a “local” and growing up in Cutchogue I will always have a soft spot for the Cutchogue Fire Department’s Chicken BBQ event. In 1957 I wasn’t even born yet. My dad “Richard” and mom “Elizabeth” were active members of the department and was among the first members that helped at the 1st Chicken BBQ (they were not in this video). As years passed and they had children, and we benefited from their hard work and dedication as well as enjoyed the best Chicken BBQ of all time. As I started to watch the DVD that I was given, I realized the people in the video were all very good friends of my parents. I also realized they're not around anymore, and I got very sad. My mom (I think is the only one left of this tightly knit group) Kurt & Jane Horton, Phil & Joan Horton, Hallock & Coty Tuthill, Bill & Jane Midgley to name a few. As I watched the video it just brought up so many memories of the fun that we all had together with them and their children as I grew up. I was married on August 27th, 1983, the day of the Chicken BBQ, although we did not serve the chicken at our reception and the food was excellent, I did miss having Cutchogue’s chicken that day. I hope everyone that watches this video gets a little emotional as I did. It’s a heartwarming story about a bunch of very dedicated group men and woman. The tradition continues every year, so hurry up and get your tickets for the next one.
