Originally built in 1940 as ROF Thorp Arch (Royal Ordnance Factory), this site was a massive munitions factory where "Canary Girls" filled shells for the war effort. The "hills" you see today are actually blast berms—man-made mounds designed to protect the site from explosions and camouflage it from Luftwaffe bombers. In the 1960s, it became one of Britain's first out-of-town retail parks. Today, much of it stands derelict. In this video, we explore: The abandoned shop units built into wartime bunkers.
