You don't need to be the oldest in an industry to achieve significant milestones, nor do you need the largest budget. Firefly Aerospace proves this perfectly. Founded in 2017, this Texas-based private company recently accomplished something no other private enterprise has achieved: a fully successful soft landing on the Moon with its Blue Ghost lunar lander. The journey began in February 2021 when NASA awarded Firefly a $93.3 million contract under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. The goal was simple yet ambitious—deliver ten scientific instruments and technology demonstrations to the Moon's surface. The mission targeted Mare Crisium, a 500-kilometer-wide basin visible from Earth, to gather data on lunar regolith, geophysical characteristics, and the interactions between the solar wind and Earth's magnetic field. This information would be critical for future human missions. To get there, Firefly chose SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket as the launch vehicle. Over the next few years, the company worked tirelessly, completing major development milestones. By November 2024, the lander was fully prepared for launch, setting the stage for a historic event. On January 15, 2025 Blue Ghost launched from Kennedy Space Center aboard Falcon 9. The mission included another payload, Hakuto-R Mission 2, but all eyes were on Firefly’s lander. Over the next 45 days, Blue Ghost traveled through space, performing health checks and preliminary science operations before reaching lunar orbit. Then came the moment that would cement Firefly’s place in history. On March 2, 2025, the Blue Ghost lander successfully touched down in Mare Crisium. The landing was fully autonomous, with onboard navigation selecting the safest site without human intervention. In the final descent, the lander relied on reaction control system thrusters to slow itself down. A cloud of lunar dust kicked up as the spacecraft settled onto the surface, tilting slightly before stabilizing. For a brief moment, it appeared that only three of the four landing legs had made contact. But upon review, Firefly confirmed that the lander had tilted slightly after touchdown, momentarily lifting one of its legs before fully settling. The shock-absorbing legs worked as designed, keeping the lander upright and stable on the uneven terrain. Standing at 2 meters tall and 3.5 meters wide, Blue Ghost had successfully completed its primary mission.
