Carbon Dioxide Based Extraction of Cannabis Professor DeBacco Description of CO2 Based Extraction Method 1. Plant material is first ground and placed into an extraction vessel. 2. CO2 gas then undergoes intense pressure and heat until supercritical. A pump then forces the supercrital CO2 into the extraction chamber where trichome and cannabinoid breakdown occur. Description of CO2 Based Extraction Method 3. A pressure release valve forces the material into a separate container where temperature and pressure can be precisely controlled. This will cause the molecules within the initial mixture to bond to the CO2. 4. Many systems will reroute CO2 back into the tank to be used during the next batch. 5. The extract is then moved to a collection jar, such as a beaker. Resulting End Product of CO2 Based Extraction CO2 extraction results in a crude oil extract, that must be further refined through other methods such as winterization/distillation. Potency of the extract typically range from 50-70% cannabinoids. Advantages of CO2 Based Extraction Higher yields than alcohol based extraction Less valuable material wasted Specific compounds with adjustments made to heat, pressure, and runtime No residual solvent in the final product due to evaporation of CO2 Disadvantages of CO2 Based Extraction Much higher initial start up cost when compared to other extraction methods Even once purchased the equipment requires proper training and safety procedures to be understood and followed.
