My Friend, from Sophisticated Beggar, is not one of Roy Harper's most popular songs but I believe it's among the dearest to hard-core Harper fans. This song was written for Jackson C. Frank. It's very bleak and desolate but still it all reaches a whole new dimension once you become aware of Frank's sad(dest) life. To think that this is from 1966 gives a sense of premonition to Roy's words - a haunting, foreboding quality that gives me chills. Technically it's certainly one of Roy Harper's most exquisite and challenging songs. It uses an unusual and unexpected tuning (open-Em, as far as I can tell), the picking is quite intricate and unlike anything Roy ever did, and the chords require some finger gymnastics. It's difficult to play and difficult to sing -- as it shows. For years I tried to crack this song in standard tuning but it just didn't seem to work. Then, a couple of years ago, John More (LiteGauge) tipped me on the open-Em tuning which was a huge improvement (I can't thank him enough for that). My first open-Em version sounded OKish but I knew it wasn't really accurate. So I found myself often going back to this song, trying to rework small bits that still didn't sound right. Now I think I finally nailed the guitar part and it's time to share an updated version of this great song. Tuning EBEGBE (capo 5th fret). NOTE: After the precious comment from Peter Ozanne, I am now convinced that only the D string is tuned up to E. The changes are very small and what I present here is very close, but I am now sure that the tuning is EAEGBE and not open Em.
