MONTE CARLO { 0:00 } MOSCOW { 3:04 } Pete Mandel (sic) and his Rhythm Masters; vocalist Tom Barratt Imperial 2190 (issued about December 1929) MONTE CARLO was the first side cut by Pete Mandell’s augmented Carlton Dance Hall band for Imperial, who showed their appreciation by spelling his name Mandel on the labels. Six-eight one-steps are not to my taste, and two on a record is at least one side too many. The six-eight beat makes all one-step tunes sound the same. Someone must have liked MOSCOW, that side is rather worn. Play spot-the-snatches from Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (and the traditional tune of the Song of the Volga Boatmen). Both songs have music-hall-like lyrics with the xenophobic stereotyping common at that time. Rust names the vocalist as Tom Barratt, but it sounds unlike him. Perhaps the scrawny-sounding recording system used at this time by Crystalate is responsible. The summer 2021 edition of Memory Lane has my comprehensive biography of Pete Mandell.
