Most freshwater aquarium sharks are not true sharks but members of the Cyprinid family which also includes Barbs, Minnows, Danios and Rasboras. There are also a few catfish that have garnered the title of “shark” because of their physical appearance and feeding habits. These fish are all quite active and will definitely foster movement in your tank. Unlike other freshwater fish, sharks do not react to other tank mates, instead; they react to the physical environment. This could take a few weeks or more, depending on the plants and decorations in the tank. Although they are quite active, it does take a new shark a substantially longer time to become comfortable in its new environment than most other fish, and a pet owner may not see their shark for quite a long time. Once a shark has become comfortable it will claim a territory and generally stay in this area. If the tank is small, the fish may try to claim the entire aquarium and become aggressive or, at the least, start fin nipping.
