Police Beat, Arrest Protesters for Violating Curfew in Baltimore

A group of protesters were beaten and then arrested in Baltimore for violating the curfew on Friday night. The riot-torn U.S. city enacted a one-week curfew starting on April 28 to address the escalating violence and unrest following the funeral of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old African American man who died after he was injured in police custody in mid-April. Protesters observed the curfew from April 28 to April 30, but some decided to stay outdoors Friday night to celebrate a Maryland state prosecutor's criminal charges against the six Baltimore police officers involved in the death of Gray. "I saw a multiple friends of mine be surrounded by police. They charged towards them and they surrounded them, so you couldn't see what was happening, but you knew they were beating them up. And after that chaotic scene happened, I saw my friend Mike, who was covered in black and blue all on the side of his face, and I was really scared. I couldn't find some of my other friends," said Baltimore resident and protester Danielle Longchamps. "We need to be here on the streets. I'll be here every moment I can that I'm not working, fighting for justice, fighting to get our city back. The national guard needs to leave. This curfew needs to end. You know, we need a conviction, not just an indictment because so many cops can even get indicted and still get paid vacation. So we need real justice," she added.
