See https://ohis.org/ for more details. The Open Headset Interconnect Standard (OHIS) provides an open (Free as in Speach) standard for microphone, headphone, and PTT signals (plus power) in a single cable and common connector. In multi-user environments such as club stations, contest stations, or EOCs, a standard headset interface allows any user to connect their own headset to any radio, without needing an adapter specific to that headset/radio pair. We #hamradio operators have standards for things like RF (50 ohm coax) and power (13.8vDC +/- %15), but we don't have a standard for the interface between the user and the radio. Is the microphone a dynamic or electret? Balanced or single ended? Is the connector an RJ-45, 8-pin round GX16, or 3.5mm TRS? Is the audio out from the radio headphone level, or speaker level? Is it ground referenced or push-pull? This situation requites a full-mesh of adapters between every headset and every radio. With OHIS, each headset gets one adapter that stays with that headset forever, and presents an OHIS User port. Similarly, each radio gets one adapter that stays with that radio forever, and presents an OHIS Radio port. Now, any OHIS User port can connect to any OHIS Radio port.
