It's been nearly a decade since Pebble was shut down, but there's been some new life brought into the project now. ~~~~~ Hi! Pebble OS Source Code - https://github.com/google/pebble Video Description ~~~~~~ Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Android News Byte. Today, I wanted to highlight some news about the Pebble OS being released as open source. . .and the work that its founder is doing to create new hardware for the platform. #pebble #pebbleos #repebble Pebble OS Goes Open Source Eric Migicovsky began working on Pebble back in 2008 because he wanted a smartwatch with a specific set of features. Features like an always-on e-paper display, extra long battery life, a simple user experience, and buttons to make it easy to interact with the software. The idea was received rather well by a niche community and it was able to grow to become quite the popular product within the smartwatch industry. Eric ran into some financial issues and ended up selling the IP to Fitbit in 2016 Which was then acquired by Google in 2021 Google did not have any plans to release a new pebble smartwatch so Eric began asking around at Google to see if they would be interested in releasing the source code on GitHub as open source. Thankfully, they said yes to this request and for the past year Google has been gathering a team together to prepare the code for the open source community. This week, that source code has officially been released and you can check out the repository over on GitHub right now. Pebble is Coming Back! With this news, Eric has confirmed that he has learned from his past mistakes and this time he will hire on a very small team in an attempt to bring back the Pebble smartwatch. Eric has said they want to keep things much more simple this time around, and it will have an emphasis on sustainability. There are not any current plans to bring in any outside investments, and he hopes that will allow them to focus on just creating a new fun Pebble watch to replace those who still like these products. The upcoming Pebble watch is said to basically have the same specs as we're used to. . .so we are unlikely to see any cutting edge tech used here. But they have said that they are working on "some new fun stuff as well." It will run the open source Pebble OS and it will be compatible with all of the Pebble apps and watchfaces that you're used to. You can sign up for the waiting list right now, over on the website rePebble.com so you're made aware of new information about the project as soon as it becomes available. conclusion I have personally never owned a Pebble smartwatch, but I have been very aware of the dedicated community they were able to create around the product. So I'll be keeping my eye on it progress, even though the smartwatch does not run Android, to see if they're able to recapture that excitement they once had. Let me know what you think about this news, and whether or not you've used a Pebble watch in the past.
