ArtSat - On Keorapetse Kgositsile with Sandile Ngidi, Dr Uhuru Phalafala and Lesego Rampolokeng

The Art and Ubuntu Trust (AUT) presents a screening and discussion of a film on Keorapetse Kgositsile. The artistic development, and vision of the former Poet Laureate of the Nation, Keorapetse William Kgositsile, known as “Bra Willie” are revealed. It allows Bra Willie to tell his life story, rooted in travel and the values inculcated in him by his mother and grandmother. He is seen performing his poetry with a jazz band, as he often did when living in exile in New York where he was a significant influence on the black arts movement in the US. The ARTSat is a weekly programme which runs from July - October 2021 and showcases amongst other presentations the film series: SOUTH AFRICAN ARTS, PAST AND PRESENT (SAAPP) “The films introduce an understanding of the roots of South African aesthetics .. how artists, musicians and writers have shaped their artistic expression. They focus on life stories and artistic practices which are rooted in indigenous knowledge and animate South African culture, transversally across the society.”
