This is the first of two poems i ever wrote, when i was 17 and decided to turn it into a song. (Verse 1) Doris, my love, these hands that still hold yours, They trace the stories etched on time's soft shores. Every single wrinkle, a map upon your face, A beautiful reminder of our journey, our shared space. From eighteen years, when laughter filled our days, To now, through seventy-two years later, lit by your sweet gaze. And with each crease, a memory, clear and true, Of every dream we chased, and everything we grew. (Chorus) And your eyes, my Doris, those cloudy, ocean blue, They hold the very essence of everything we've been through. They're clearer than the waters, though the light may fade, Reflecting every moment of the happiness we've made. A love more vast than cosmos, deeper than the sea, I love you more today than when you first said "yes" to me. (Verse 2) Through wartime nights, when fear held shadows deep, And echoes of the battlefields would disturb my sleep. I'd close my eyes and see your gentle, hopeful face, That aqua blue, a beacon in that desolate place. Helping the Allies, fighting for what was right, Your love, my Doris, was my guiding light. It brought me home, safe from the distant fray, To build this life with you, day after precious day. (Bridge) My other memories, they might begin to blur, Faces, names, and places that no longer stir. But every single moment I have spent with you, Remains as bright as sunrise, utterly, perfectly new. And oh, my dearest Doris, a secret I must share, I'm glad you cannot see me, standing with my silver hair. I want to be the young man, full of youthful fire, The boy you fell in love with, and still so deeply admire. (Outro) So rest now, my sweet Doris, as I hold your hand so tight, You're drifting to that tranquil, endless light. My heart beats with your rhythm, gentle, soft, and low, The greatest love a man could ever know. And in that quiet whisper, as your spirit takes its flight, My ocean's gaze, my everything, a final goodnight.
