Wide of priests walking inside temple area STORYLINE Security was tightened at Nepal's most revered Pashupatinath temple in Katmandu on Saturday following an assault on two Indian priests by Maoist protesters. The two recently appointed Hindu priests, Girish Bhatta and Raghavendra Bhatta, were beaten by dozens of Maoists who barged into the 5th century Hindu shrine on Friday, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported. Local police rescued the priests, who come from the South Indian state of Karnataka, and arrested two attackers, including the one leading the group, PTI reported. After the incident, the Nepali government provided a personal security officer to the head priest of the temple and deployed armed police at the shrine. Maoist groups have been opposing the appointment of Indian priests at the Pashupatinath temple, demanding that Nepali priests be employed instead. Nepal's king had traditionally appointed the country's top priests, but the monarchy was abolished last year and the country's former communist rebels won the elections. Traditionally the head priests - know as Bhattas - are from southern India and are assisted in their rites by lower priests from Nepal. Pashupatinath temple is a shrine to the Hindu god Shiva and is well known both in India and Nepal. It is visited by millions of pilgrims every year. The temple row has raised widespread concern in India and has been denounced by Indian Hindu politicians as political interference in religious affairs. Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood took up the matter with Nepal Home Minister Bhim Bahadur Rawal and Culture Minister Sarat Singh Bhandari who assured him that steps would be taken to ensure safety of the priests , PTI reported on Saturday.
