(28 Dec 2016) LEAD IN: Libya has become a transit state for migrants fleeing poverty and violence in their countries, seeking job opportunities and dreaming of a better life in Europe. Libyan authorities are forced to take action by capturing them and detaining them in shelters before they set off for Europe. STORY-LINE El-Hamra detention centre in Gharyan, 100 kilometres south of Tripoli. This centre can hold up to 3000 immigrants, providing 32 shelters and food. It is currently holding about 1800 migrants from different African nationalities. The migrant's are from Niger, Chad, Nigeria, Ghana, Sudan and Morocco, and all of them intended to go to Europe. The sheltered migrants speak of the suffering they are now enduring in the centre, as the cold and spread of illness among some is affecting them, their only wish now is to go back to their countries. "I was going to Europe to work and make a good life to help my family, to help my mother and my father because really we are from a poor family, that was my only purpose to go to Europe, but now is what God makes, it's better for me to go back home when we have help to go back," says one Senegalese migrant. The centre officials cannot continue this process for an infinite amount of time, as food supplies as well as sheltering and security measures have cost the country so much already. They are demanding that the international community make a stand and lend their support, as the issue concerns them as much as it concerns Libyans. "According to our investigations we have some information about other groups that consists of 450-thousand to 500-thousand immigrants that could reach Libya in 2017, and for this matter we have to warn the Libyan authorities and any other party who is concerned by this issue," says Colonel Bahlol Ibrahim, Head of Gharyan Illegal Immigrations department. There is also the perennial concern that some migrants may have travelled here to join militant groups. The migrant crisis began to escalate dangerously in 2015 when high numbers of unauthorised foreign nationals attempted to travel to the European Union. According to the United Nations, the most dangerous migration route is from Libya to Italy, where the UN estimates one in every 47 refugees dies. The UN recently reported that migrants in Libya are subject to serious human rights violations and abuses.
