Today we hit the South of Wakefield once again after a brief trip North to come back to the second of two “twins” and I use that term loosely here because the first of the two twins was really just a small hamlet that’s attached to a much larger village. This one’s split into two discernible sections connected by a common. The South of the village is the much more residential part and features the only village shop (although the North of the village did have one as well until recently), as well as featuring a number of entries for the village Scarecrow Festival this year! In the North we have things like the village pub – the only one left in the village now after the demise of the Fox Inn – and the primary school. By far the most interesting thing this one has though comes in the form of the common that you’ll find between the two areas. This was the site of the former colliery – a drift mine no less – which now is common land, free to anyone and everyone to walk across without sticking to footpaths. In the Southwest of the parish is Felkirk, a small area defined by a church and an old schoolroom (which you might have seen before on a Parish Noticeboard episode!). Felkirk takes it’s name from an old Norse word meaning “church made of wood or planks”, and it would eventually name the parish which had settlements of the likes of Grimethorpe and Brierley to its name once. Hodroyd Hall and the old railway line that we’ve seen before finish this one off, and did I mention Holgate’s Hospital? That’s where we’re going to begin the Hemsworth episode as it straddles the border between that this. Read “South Heendley” here – welcome to SOUTH HIENDLEY. **** My name is Andy.
