The joint receives blood supply from branches of the superficial temporal and maxillary arteries, and sensory innervation mainly from the auriculotemporal nerve of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve, with additional input from masseteric and deep temporal nerves. Functionally, the lower compartment facilitates rotation, while the upper compartment enables translation, allowing a wide range of mandibular motion.
