VOICE OVER: 0003 The funeral began with a service at the People's Palace, the government hall where Kabila had already laid in state for two days 0011 Outside, thousands of people crowded against the fence as around 500 dignitaries were ushered in. 0017 Inside the palace, Joseph Kabila laid a wreath of flowers in front of his father's casket. 0023 He remained sombre throughout the service, watching silently as dozens of dignitaries bowed before the white and gold coffin. 0030 At one point, a soldier in jungle camouflage opened the coffin, revealing the face of the former leader. 0037 The scene, which was broadcast on national television, may have been planned to disprove widespread rumours that he had already been buried in Lumumbashi. 0046 They then proceeded in a convoy to the Palace of the Nation, where the coffin was to be interred in the mausoleum. 0054 The funeral came amidst rising anti-Western sentiment, as the people of this city lashed out at foreigners, particularly white foreigners, blaming them for Kabila's killing. 0103 Why Kabila was killed remains a mystery - though theories are rampant - ranging from a single angry gunman, to a power struggle within Kabila's inner circle. 0115 The government holds to the lone bodyguard version. 0119 In the first days after Kabila was killed and his son was named to take his place, anger towards the ruling family was commonly heard in Kinshasa. 0129 That changed when Kabila's casket was put on display on Sunday and the official period of mourning began.
