Pool-Playing Blues isn't necessarily about the game of billiards if you consider this song, much like many others of the early era blues, a double entendre with easily interpreted sexual referencing behind only a thin vail of disguise. In the era of Vaudeville, such play-on-words was known as Hokum. Pool-Playing Blues was written by Jesse Olden Cryor. Cryor, born in Baltimore in 1906, was a Vaudeville performer, musician and songwriter who is credited with having written several songs in the latter-half of the 1940s, including this one for Amos Milburn. Cryor's own sides can be found on the G & G Records and Coronet Records label from 1946. His earlier music was on the Columbia Race Series in 1928, although there was no blues interest in the recordings. As a play on his name, he was sometimes nicknamed Cryin' Jesse. Released in May, 1948, on the Aladdin Jazz Series label, Pool-Playing Blues is the b-side to I Still Love You. In the May 18th issue of Billboard, the review described Pool-Playing Blues as 'A smooth job - but the lyrics are too purple for airing. Could do well in race jukes', giving it a NS (not suitable) rating for disc jockeys. Amos Milburn is known to have recorded over 75 sides during his 8-year stay at Aladdin Records. A smooth, R&B and jump-blues vocalist, Amos was also an accomplished pianist, accompanying himself and influencing artists such as Fats Domino and Little Richard. His piano style merged jump blues, boogie woogie and the early onset of rock 'n' roll. Among Milburn's best known hits are Bad, Bad Whiskey, In The Middle Of The Night, Chicken Shack Boogie, Let's Make Christmas Merry, Baby, and One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer. After Aladdin cancelled Milburn's contract due to lagging sales and their own business troubles, Amos signed to Ace Records and was also on the King label with his long-time friend Charles Brown, but sales failed to materialize. He later signed with Motown for two years but his style was no longer considered popular among the record-buying public and radio listeners. Milburn died in 1972 at the age of 52 after suffering three strokes. Lyrics I've got a pool playing baby, We play pool all the time. I've got a pool playing baby, We play pool all the time. When we play on the table, Yes, it sure is fine. We play so hard, 'til her eyes turn cherry red. Yes, she plays so hard, 'til her eyes turn cherry red. I love the way she plays, 'cause she always use her head. I pick up my cue stick at sundown, We play 'til early dawn. I pick up my cue stick at sundown, We play 'til early dawn. She knocks the ivories around, 'til everything is gone. We roll them up and down, From side to side. But I always plop them in, Because the pocket's open wide. I've got a pool playin' baby, Play pool all the time. When we play on the table, Ooooo-eee, It sure is fine! Also known as : AMOS MILBURN AND HIS CHICKENSHACKERS and sometimes misspelled in text as Milbourne or Milborne. Not to be confused with Amos Milburn Jr who is no relation.
