Spinal tumors are abnormal growths that form in or around the spinal cord and vertebrae. They may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) and can cause significant neurological problems by compressing the spinal cord or spinal nerves. Spinal tumors are classified by location: intradural, extradural, intramedullary, or exophytic, each affecting the spine differently. Symptoms may include persistent back pain, radiating nerve pain, numbness, weakness, balance problems, or even loss of bladder or bowel control. Diagnosis typically involves MRI or CT imaging, and sometimes a biopsy to confirm the type of tumor. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Mayo Clinic, and PubMed, treatment depends on the tumor’s type, size, location, and whether it’s cancerous. Options include surgical resection, radiation therapy, steroid medications, and chemotherapy for certain malignancies. Surgery is often required when the tumor causes spinal cord compression or neurologic decline. Early detection and timely treatment are critical to preserving spinal cord function and preventing permanent disability.
