Registered Dietitian (RD) Student Internship Series—Ep. 02_ Bariatric Patient Case Studies Presentation by student: Bailey Fairess with Myrna Haag RD,LD/N Myrna’s goal for every intern is to cultivate independent, analytical thinkers who can integrate nutrition science, data interpretation, and clinical application to improve patient outcomes. Through this research experience, interns learn to connect theory with practice — applying the principles of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) within a private practice framework. The RD Student Internship: Reviewing Bariatric Patient Case Studies with the Myrna Method Critical Thinking Model — a structured approach to understanding metabolism through applied research and clinical reasoning. In this internship, the student analyzed a case study of a patient’s metabolism following bariatric surgery. The research included a data-driven discussion on how metabolism is affected by obesity and diabetes post-bariatric surgery, and to what extent these metabolic changes are prevalent among other patients who struggle to lose more than 100 pounds. Myrna and the student intern also explored why metabolism becomes disrupted, making weight loss more difficult, as well as the dietary interventions being used to address these challenges.
