But many therapists (at least depth therapists) struggle to keep therapy work focused. In fact, traditional depth models taught that it is important for the client to take the lead, and the therapist simply give them space. But this can lead to a meandering flow, where it is unclear what is being accomplished. Experiential therapies differ from other depth approaches in their use of therapeutic focus, where the client expresses clearly what they want to work on in therapy, and the therapist is very active in keeping their focus on this area. In this video, we explore not only the importance of therapeutic focus, but how to set it up at the beginning of therapy, as well as during the first few steps of the work. 00:00 Introduction 01:13 Why Focus Matters 04:21 Where to Start? 05:28 Getting Specific 09:49 Maintaining Therapeutic Focus Between Sessions 11:11 Use of an Example 18:40 Summary of Whole Series 19:20 Patreon Invitation The information provided by Dr. Tori Olds is solely intended for informational and entertainment purposes and are not a substitute for advice, diagnosis, or treatment regarding medical or mental health conditions.
