This sutta is part of a group of three "Bojjhanga" discourses (the others involving Maha Moggallana and the Buddha himself) often recited in Buddhist traditions as Paritta (protective chanting) for healing and protection against disease. It emphasizes the profound influence of a purified mind on physical well-being. Background Story Location: The Buddha was staying at the Bamboo Grove (Veluvana) near Rajagaha. The Circumstances: At the same time, the Venerable Maha Kassapa, one of the Buddha's most eminent and austere disciples, was living in the Pipphali Cave. He had fallen gravely ill and was suffering from severe physical pain. The Visitation: Upon emerging from his evening meditation, the Buddha visited Maha Kassapa to inquire about his health. When Maha Kassapa informed the Buddha that his pains were increasing and not diminishing, the Buddha chose to preach the seven factors of enlightenment as a form of spiritual "medicine". The Discourse: The Buddha expounded on the seven factors he had perfectly realized: Mindfulness (Sati) Investigation of the Dhamma (Dhamma-vicaya) Energy (Viriya) Zest/Rapture (Piti) Tranquility (Passaddhi) Concentration (Samadhi) Equanimity (Upekkha). The Outcome: As Maha Kassapa listened to and delighted in the discourse, his mind became clear and his physical ailments vanished instantly. The sutta records that he recovered from the illness "like a drop of water from a lotus leaf".
