We start this summer afternoon walk in Makrinitsa, on the top of a cobbled street up from the main square. Our first stop is a remarkable complex of churches, featuring the 'Despotiko', the unique two-storey Church of Agioi Pantes and Agios Nikolaos, as well as the quaint Church of Agioi Anargyroi. The area is dominated by the famous belfry, visible from every part of the settlement. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is the central parish church of the village, was built in 1767. The earthquakes of 1955 destroyed a large part of it, which ten years later was restored with the financial contribution of the Greek American Hadjikonstantinos Utskounis. Then we walk down to the central square of Makrinitsa, seeing in the way some beautiful views of Volos underneath and traditional stone houses with their distinctive Pelion architecture, now mostly operating as holiday villas or small hotels. Reaching the main square, we go inside the Old Church of Ioannis the Precursor, located at the Central Square of Makrinitsa. This historic church, built in 1806 on the site of an older chapel dating back to 1480, features an austere wood-sculpted temple with a meticulously crafted gate to the sanctuary, dating to the mid-19th century. Inside, we find an impressive fresco of John the Baptist, created by the Athonite painter Iakovos around 1958 during the church's renovation following the 1955 earthquakes. We then continue to explore the central square of Makrinitsa, surrounded by picturesque restaurants and cafes. The vibrant square offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Pelion, making this walk a truly immersive experience. As we leave the main square, we browse through charming traditional shops that sell local herbs, sweets from Pelion, and various crafts. The village's quaint atmosphere is complemented by the presence of friendly local cats, adding to the warmth of the experience.
