Travel back over two centuries at Newport Arch, Lincoln

#lincoln #history #memories #thenandnow #nostalgia #ancienthistory Here we are again on Bailgate looking at the northern gateway to the old Roman Lincoln. I've done many time shifts of it, use the search facility to see them, but this is the first to use drawings to allow us to see the arch before cameras were invented. The time shift at the start of the video goes back to 1722, and it is followed by an artist impression of the arch during Roman and medieval times. That is followed by a drawing from 1784 and finally another from 1792. Newport Arch was originally constructed c200AD as the north gate to the Roman settlement of Lindum. It was enlarged in the 4th century, when the then Lindum Colonia became the capitol of the province of Flavia Caesariensis. The arch is the oldest in the UK where traffic still passes through it. Although you can see what looks like a complete archway, it is estimated that a further 8 feet lie underground, below sediments that have formed over the last 2,000 years, giving some idea of the size of the original Roman archway. Over the years many buildings must have stood adjacent to the arch, and during the second half of the 19th century the building to the left actually touched the it. But it was demolished and replaced by a new building set a few feet to the west, allowing for the public footpath to pass between it and the Arch as we see today. Over the years several vehicles have crashed into the arch, or got stuck beneath it, causing much local amusement, and requiring regular repairs!
