Norwood (N) have received their own type of hybrids for the first time in the form of Volvo B5LH Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 buses, I believe HV280-323, for routes 2/N2 (contract retain, on 1st April) and 249 (contract gain, on 1st April). Obviously the drivers and engineers have already been type trained and or still ongoing to further staff, in order to be familiar by the time 249 returns to Arriva operation. I shall elaborate my opinion on this type for my childhood favourite route 2. In general, the Gemini 3 hybrid on the B5LH chassis was a good choice as a successor to the ageing 14 year old B7TL ALX400s which have been strained with the dense usage of routes 2/176 and for 3 years 68, and the last 7 years strays on 133. The Gemini 3 hybrid being powerful, combined 400 horsepower delivers almost any sort of confidence against any possible gradient London has to offer, having said that, these HVs do their job by being quick off the go, and at one point we went past a traffic light just going red, much faster than the speed of a B7TL of which would get caught in. Since we're in the era of Ultra Low Emission Zone (to come eventually, 2018-20 ish), hybrids is a must for central London routes. And not only continuing the Volvo legacy, but route 2's batch in my personal opinion delivers great looks (especially with the gold coloured ad frames), brilliant performance and latent ability to devour the capacity that is dense for route 2 without issues. Though the E40H would do no less but the B5LH does a better job on such a route.
