Bason Botanic Gardens is located just north of Whanganui in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand, approximately a 15 to 20 minute drive from Whanganui city centre. The gardens sit alongside State Highway 3, making them easy to reach for visitors travelling between Whanganui and New Plymouth. Established on land gifted to the city by Stanley and Blanche Bason in the 1960s, the gardens were developed as a public space combining landscaped gardens with outdoor sculpture. Today, Bason Botanic Gardens is known for its blend of formal garden areas, open lawns, lakes, and a permanent collection of contemporary sculptures set throughout the grounds. Key features include the winter garden, seasonal flower beds, expansive lawns, mature trees, and a network of walking paths that connect the sculpture installations. The gardens host a changing programme of temporary exhibitions alongside the permanent works, giving returning visitors something new to see. Facilities at Bason Botanic Gardens include free parking, public toilets, picnic areas, and the onsite café, which operates most days and offers indoor and outdoor seating. The gardens are mostly flat and accessible, making them suitable for families with children, prams, and visitors with limited mobility. Most visitors spend around one to two hours exploring the gardens, though it’s easy to stay longer if you plan to enjoy the café or a relaxed picnic. The gardens are well suited to families, with open spaces for children and safe walking paths throughout. Each season brings a different feel to the gardens. Spring and summer highlight flowering displays and lush greenery, while autumn brings colour through the trees. Winter offers a quieter experience, with the winter garden and sculptures becoming the main focus. Nearby attractions include Whanganui city, Virginia Lake, and the Whanganui River, making Bason Botanic Gardens an easy addition to a wider day trip in the area.
