Dr. O'Neil Discusses Robotic Prostatectomy Versus Open Surgery

Brock O'Neil, MD, physician instructor in urologic surgery, Vanderbilt University, discusses robotic prostatectomy versus open surgery. O'Neil says that patients do well overall with open surgery, which has little risk for excessive blood loss. However, the introduction of robotics has changed the way physicians think about surgery, says O'Neil. He adds that patients who receive robotic surgery tend to do just as well, if not better than the best open case scenario. O'Neil believes that his generation is getting very little exposure to the open technique. Throughout his residency, he saw that decline as he performed more robotic surgeries than open; he is more comfortable conducting surgeries with robotics today.
