WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF unless you REALLY know what you're doing! There are a heck of a lot of ways this can go wrong, and it will definitely ruin your computer (and your day, presumably) if it does! And trust me when I say that DOS is one of very few OSes (if not the only OS) where this can be done even remotely safely! I ended up in something of a sticky situation recently when I tried to format and reinstall Windows on this old Toshiba laptop I got at the thrift store. I realized I didn't have the proprietary floppy drive for the machine, and without it, I couldn't boot into Windows Setup. Luckily, Windows 95 (which was on the machine previously) is based on DOS, and DOS has the advantage of being completely memory resident. This allowed me to do something clever (but very risky) to get a clean copy of Windows 98 installed on the machine... Let's just say that if this machine had crashed and rebooted at any point before Windows Setup finished copying files, I would have been quite thoroughly screwed!
