If you are curious to know what Kyoto was like before the advent of modernity just walk along the two narrow streets Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, symbols of old Kyoto and of times long gone. Just one year younger than Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka is a 100-meter-long avenue that leads to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Again you will find yourself walking on a curved and slightly sloping road, bordered by numerous historic buildings that have earned the area the title of protected historic district. Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺, Kiyomizu Temple, "Pure Water Monastery") is a Buddhist temple part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kiyomizu-dera was founded in the early Heian period. The temple's present buildings were constructed in 1633, ordered built by Tokugawa Iemitsu. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure. It takes its name from the waterfall within the complex, which runs off the nearby hills. Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water. The temple complex includes several other shrines, among them the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to Ōkuninushi, a god of love and "good matches". Source Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiyomiz...
