He is recognized as a lyricist, poet, screenwriter, film director, and dialogue writer, famous for his sensitivity and skill in expressing human emotions. The impact of the Partition of India deeply affected Gulzar, a theme present in much of his poetry. After relocating to Delhi and later Mumbai, he worked in a garage while pursuing his love for literature, especially Urdu and Hindi poetry. Influenced by Rabindranath Tagore, he became involved with the Progressive Writers Association, which encouraged him to enter the film industry. Gulzar began his Bollywood journey as an assistant to directors Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, debuting as a lyricist with the song "Mora Gora Ang Lai Le" in the film Bandini (1963). His lyrics combine poetic finesse with everyday language and philosophical depth, characterized by vivid imagery and unique metaphors. Throughout his career, Gulzar collaborated with famous music directors like R. D. Burman, S. D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Vishal Bhardwaj, and A. R. Rahman, creating many iconic songs and gaining international acclaim. Gulzar is also noted for his successful directorial projects, such as Mere Apne (1971), Koshish (1972), Aandhi (1975), Mausam (1975), and Ijaazat (1987). His acclaimed television series Mirza Ghalib (1988) and numerous screenplays for other films further showcase his talent.
