In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy discusses the medullary reticulospinal tract, a key descending motor pathway originating from the medullary reticular formation. We begin by examining how this tract receives input from higher brain centers, including the motor cortex, as well as from sensory pathways, allowing it to modulate motor activity in response to both voluntary commands and reflexive needs. We then trace the pathway as it descends ipsilaterally in the ventral funiculus of the spinal cord. The medullary reticulospinal tract plays a significant role in inhibiting extensor muscle tone and facilitating flexor muscles, helping to maintain postural balance and enabling smooth, coordinated movement. This inhibitory influence contrasts with the excitatory effects of the pontine reticulospinal tract, highlighting the complementary nature of these two systems. Functionally, the medullary reticulospinal tract contributes to automatic adjustments during locomotion, modulates muscle tone, and suppresses reflexes when needed for voluntary movement precision. We also touch on its role in recovering motor function following corticospinal tract injury, where it can take on compensatory functions in motor control.
