As spotted lanternfly eggs prepare to hatch, the Cleveland Metroparks is unleashing a new set of weapons in the battle of the bugs. Four dogs have been trained to recognize the scent of spotted lanternfly egg masses. Gail Samko and her dog Rio are on the team. She says Rio, a rescue, has some anxiety around people, but when he's headed to the park to work, he's all business. "When he gets these leashes on, or his harness, he knows he's working," Samko said. "He gets very antsy. He likes to get the job done." Cleveland Metroparks put on a demonstration of the dogs searching for egg masses at Settlers Bluff, a picnic area in the Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation. Senior Conservation Science Manager Connie Hausman says the dogs take the hunt for the invasive bugs to a whole new level.
