Safe motherhood program is aimed to ensuring healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, and postnatal care, including breastfeeding, while improving the health status of women and newborns. The program's primary goal is to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by ensuring quality care during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal period. The program was launched in 1997 AD and is guided by: Safe Motherhood Policy 1998 Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Rights Act (2075) Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Regulation 2077 Safe Motherhood and Newborn Health Roadmap 2030 According to the Nepal Population and Housing Census 2021, the current maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of Nepal is 151 per 100,000 live births, while the target MMR by SDG 2030 is 110 per 100,000 live births.
