Dr. Sarah J. Jackson is an Associate Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication and the University of Pennsylvania where she studies how media, journalism, and technology are used by and represent marginalized publics with a focus on communication arising from Black, feminist, and activist spaces. Jackson's first book, Black Celebrity, Racial Politics, and the Press (Routledge, 2014), examined the relationship between Black celebrity activism, journalism, and American politics. Her co-authored second book, Hashtag Activism: Networks of Race and Gender Justice (MIT Press, 2020), focused on the use of Twitter in contemporary social movements. Her current book project, A Second Sight, traces the power and innovation of African American media-makers. She serves on the editorial boards of half a dozen top journals, co-directs the Media, Inequality, and Change Center, and is frequently called on as an expert in media.
