Come along with me as I search for and identify native plants in a high quality forest in the Upper Midwest. I discover a strange shrub that flowers from mid-autumn into winter, a native orchid species with mesmerizing rattlesnake skin patterned leaves, a thorny tree that hosts a beautiful butterfly, and a deceiving shrub that fools you into believing it's a maple. When I go on nature walks, I like to do what is called "botanizing", which is a fancy term for wandering around and seeing what plants you might find. It's a great way to learn about the living things around you, and learn about ecology by seeing which plants grow where. It works as a useful way to learn plant identification while also enjoying hiking in the outdoors.
