The Department of Corrections has a mandate to provide necessary health care to the incarcerated population. This includes dentistry. Hans Guerra is the dentist at Larch Corrections Center in Yacolt. Guerra has worked for the department for over a year and previously spent a few years working abroad while honing his craft. Dr. Guerra likes that he’s able to see one patient at a time as opposed to dividing his attention to two or three chairs at a time. Currently, dental clinics are at nine of the correctional facilities throughout the state. At the facilities without dentists, inmates are transported to facilities with dental clinics on an emergent basis. There are 18 dentists, seven hygienists, and over 20 dental assistants at these facilities. Having the ability to focus on providing quality individualized dental care, and with such a diverse population that presents unique challenges, is a big reason dental professionals are attracted to working for Corrections.
