Amanda Seims, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust - Researching Women and Girls’ Safety in Parks

Session 1: Researching Women and Girls’ Safety in Parks and Public Spaces: Approaches, Methodologies & Reflections Women and Girls' Safety in Parks Thursday 11 May 2023, 9:30 – 17:00 School of Law, University of Leeds *Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council & the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies ‘Co-designing green spaces with adolescent girls: an evaluation in Bradford’ (Day 2, Session 1) Park provision for adolescents typically defaults to group shelters, multi-use games areas, and skate parks, which can be dominated by boys and may not meet the needs of many girls. Gender-sensitive park design may help reduce girls’ barriers to using these spaces, allowing them to benefit from opportunities to enhance health and wellbeing. This work evaluated the use of a co-design process with adolescent girls to develop three areas of green space in urban areas of Bradford. Data were collected through researcher observations and participant feedback surveys to understand feasibility and acceptability. Further data will be collected this summer through focus groups once the spaces are developed and activated. Dr Amanda Seims, Senior Research Fellow, Born in Bradford, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Dr Amanda Seims is a Senior Research Fellow, at Born in Bradford, working within the Join Us: Move, Play (JU:MP) Sport England funded programme. JU:MP is aiming to increase the habitual physical activity levels of children, aged 5-14, living in the Bradford Local Delivery Pilot area. Amanda is currently researching influences on adolescent girls’ usage of parks in Bradford and the feasibility and acceptability of using a co-designed approach to developing green spaces. She is also leading the process evaluation of the JU:MP programme, with a focus on children and parents living in the areas of delivery, and supporting the evaluation of JU:MP funded physical activity provision by local organisations. Amanda joined the JU:MP team in March 2020 following research and evaluation experience gained through her PhD in Sport Science, and subsequent roles within the Leeds Clinical Commissioning Group, Yorkshire Cancer Research and the Centre for Men’s Health at Leeds Beckett University. Within these roles, she evaluated behaviour change interventions to support lifestyle changes to mitigate risk of non-communicable disease, reduce diabetes medication, and increase cancer screening attendance. Amanda also co-led the State of Men’s Health in Leeds report on behalf of Leeds City Council.
