My recent “light” reading is Molecular and Cell Biology for Dummies. I’m a huge fan of this book series and resort to them every time I want to learn about a new subject… (in Kindle form I might add, I hate lugging books around, it feels positively prehistoric!) even if I’ve already got a sense of it I like to know that I’m getting a good solid foundation by reading their take on the subject. One of the things that came up in my reading was how cigarette smoke paralyses the cilia, which are the tiny little whip-like tails on the cells that make up the lungs. They are responsible for getting rid of all that mucus that forms to catch all the terrible things that shouldn’t be in your lungs and that could damage them (like cigarette smoke perhaps?!). So with them paralysed that stuff just sits there, which is another disgusting reason not to smoke. But when you sleep you’re not smoking…or you should be anyway, so they start to wake up and waving around frantically trying to make up for lost time…thus the smokers cough. That little side bar made me suddenly realize what Frankensteins we are. We are a collection of billions of tiny simple cells and bacteria that have somehow managed to independently work together to for the great lumbering beasts that we are…incredible stuff!
