Crossing the Great Syrian Desert was more than a journey through geography — it was a passage through history itself. Between endless plains of sand and scattered ruins, traces of both ancient empires and modern conflicts still shape the silence of this land. The Bedouin communities who call this desert home remain its true custodians — resilient, self-reliant, and deeply connected to their environment. Sharing tea with them beneath the open sky felt like stepping into a living fragment of human heritage. Along the route from Palmyra toward Damascus, the landscape tells contrasting stories: the brilliance of ancient architecture, the scars of recent war, and the unbroken spirit of people who continue to rebuild their lives. Each ruined arch and each deserted outpost stands as a reminder of how civilisations rise, fall, and survive in memory. Reaching Damascus — one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities — marked the end of this expedition and my final day in Syria.
