The ceramic one broke very quickly. I had hoped the marble one would be more durable and I am not disappointed! It is quite heavy both in the mortar and the pestle. While I had to whack the dogs pill a few times with the ceramic one, in order to flatten the pill, this one is almost effortless. I basically just centre the the pestle down on the pill and it breaks it, Then I work at it a few more times and it is powder. The mortar is also a really good size for crushing fresh herbs, garlic, nuts, etc.
