Ammonia-fed solid oxide fuel cell as power source for maritime industries

The International Maritime Organization has set ambitious targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, driving interest in cleaner marine fuels. For land- and resource-constrained Singapore, ammonia is emerging as a promising hydrogen carrier for decarbonisation due to its high energy density, ease of storage and transport, and strong potential as a bunker fuel. With global demand for ammonia expected to grow significantly by 2050, this project led by ERI@N researchers explore the use of ammonia with solid oxide fuel cells to deliver efficient, low-carbon power for port operations. By developing advanced catalysts, ammonia reactors and integrated fuel cell systems, the initiative aims to support cleaner and more sustainable maritime operations.
