Libby Weitnauer is a former fiddle student of mine at the Old Town School of Folk Music (she was, at the time, getting a B.A. in Violin Performance at DePaul University) and is now one of my favorite old-time fiddlers on the scene. She plays soulfully and thoughtfully. She was one of the easiest students to coach because I could assign her the task of studying at home a particular recording of an old-time master playing each tune she wanted to work on. Between lessons she'd explore the nooks and crannies of those remarkable renditions, and return the next week with an even greater command of old-time vocabulary thanks to her immersions. Her discerning ear, classical violin chops, and prior fiddle experience allowed her to learn directly from those (mostly archival) recordings and not just from me. In a sense, I wasn't her only teacher at the time; she was simultaneously studying with musical titans of the 20th century including Luther Strong, William Hamilton Stepp, Tommy Jarrell, and Emmett Lundy. For our video together, Libby taught me this wonderful tune from Luther Strong, who was recorded in September & October of 1937 by Alan and Elizabeth Lomax in Perry County, Kentucky for the Library of Congress.
