Planting Trees in the Amazon: The Amazon Project | One Tree Planted

We're planting trees in the Amazon rainforest with The World Resources Institute (WRI) and our local on-the-ground partners AIDER to help with rainforest destruction. ✅ Subscribe to One Tree Planted: https://bit.ly/2IsCtqc 🌳 Learn more about our Amazon Project at https://onetreeplanted.org/amazon-video The Amazon rainforest was hit by record forest fires in 2019. #prayforamazonia was trending on social media and people, businesses, and governments from all over the world stepped up to help out, plant trees in the Amazon and change policy towards deforestation in the rainforest. All of the media attention for the Amazon fires meant that the amount of trees that we are planting in the region has increased dramatically. So we headed to our tree planting partners in Peru for project updates and to explore new opportunities to plant trees in the Amazon basin. Through Amazon reforestation, we're hoping to restore farmland surrounding natural areas to forest cover through planting forest tree species. These areas are called 'buffer zones' as they provide a natural buffer between areas of human settlement and untouched parts of the Amazon rainforest. We were connected with our planting partners AIDER by the World Resources Institute @WorldResourcesInst , a new partnership that will provide us with access to high quality reforestation projects around the world! The first stop on our Amazon #reforestation mission was Madre de Dios in the South of Peru, to visit our partners AIDER. Our projects here were established through our partnership with WRI and focus on helping farmers move away from mining and animal agriculture and move towards agroforestry and the cultivation of cacao. We then headed north to visit our new partners who are planting rubber trees, amongst other species, in San Martín and Loreto provinces. Visit our Amazon project to plant trees: https://onetreeplanted.org/amazon-video Join us in our Amazonian reforestation mission! #amazonrainforest #onetreeplanted The Amazon Rainforest: The #Amazon is the world's largest tropical #rainforest, spanning 9 countries in total: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. At 6.9 million square kilometers (2.72 million square miles), the Amazon Basin is roughly the size of the 48 contiguous United States and covers around 40% of the South American continent. Approximately 70% of South America's GDP is produced in areas that receive rainfall or water from the Amazon. From 2001 to 2017, Peru lost 2.67Mha of tree cover, equivalent to a 3.4% decrease since 2000, and 307Mt of CO₂ of emissions, according to Global Forest Watch. (Where is this data from? Is it’s from GFW can we add what I added?) Between 2001 and 2017, a total of 688Mt of CO₂ (40.5Mt per year) was released into the atmosphere as a result of tree cover loss in Peru. (This seems to contradict the other number? Can we pick just one) Many of these countries, including Peru, are fighting this trend. They are members of Initiative 20x20, Latin America’s restoration movement. Together, communities, countries, and companies are hoping to restore 123 million acres of degraded land in forests like the Amazon and on farms and pasture.
