Hamburg has lived through many disasters over the centuries — fires, floods, disease — but none shaped the city as profoundly as World War II. In this video, I take you on a walk through Hamburg to places where the scars of the war are still visible today: from the ruins of St. Nikolai Church, once the tallest building in the world, to the completely erased district of Hammerbrook, and on to Barmbek, where pre-war buildings stand right next to 1950s postwar reconstruction — a silent trace of the firestorm caused by Operation Gomorrah in July 1943. Along the way, we look at how Allied bombing changed Hamburg forever, how entire neighborhoods vanished in a single night, and how the city rebuilt itself in the decades that followed. The walk ends at one of Hamburg’s most striking WWII structures: a massive bunker that survived the war, could not be demolished, and has since been transformed into a new landmark with hotels, culture, and a rooftop garden. This video is not about assigning blame or relativizing history. World War II brought immense suffering to people across Europe — including here in Hamburg — and it’s clear who started the war. This walk is about memory, urban history, and how cities carry their past into the present. If you enjoy walking tours, history, and seeing how the past still shapes modern cities, feel free to leave a thumbs up, subscribe, and join me on future walks through Hamburg and beyond. 00:27 St. Nicholas Church 03:16 The Erased District 06:59 The Firestorm 10:52 The Bunker Moin — and thanks for watching.
