When I wrote my book The Audio Expert (link below) I intended to include a chapter on music theory because it ties into the big picture of "how audio works." But by the time I finished my book I was already 90 pages over my publisher's limit, so three of the chapters had to go on the book's web site as PDF files. I already made notes for the music theory chapter, so I decided to create this video. Explaining music theory makes more sense as a video anyway, since a video can include music as audio to accompany the written examples. This video packs a college-level course into about 2-1/2 hours, though it includes more than just music theory. For example, playing techniques for musical instruments are demonstrated, as well as information about orchestra conductors, and so forth. Because of the length the video is divided into five segments: Segment 1: INTRODUCTION PART I: MELODY—NOTES, SCALES, INTERVALS, AND ARPEGGIOS PART II: MUSICAL KEYS—SHARPS AND FLATS Segment 2: Part III: HARMONY AND CHORDS Segment 3: PART III: HARMONY AND CHORDS (continued) Segment 4: PART IV: MUSICAL TIMING AND TIME SIGNATURES Segment 5: PART V: MUSICIANS AND THEIR INSTRUMENTS Bug Report 1: In Segment 1 (this video) at 14:10 I said singer Eric Burdon of the animals switches between major and minor. In fact he switches between normal and flat fifths. Bug Report 2: Also in Segment 1, at 26:30 I explained the 8va symbol that specifies playing the notes one octave higher than written. I should have said one octave above rather than higher since that's what the "a" in 8va stands for. I also failed to mention the opposite 8vb symbol, which means to play the notes one octave below what's written.
