Most geologists know that complex feedback between different processes goes into creating an orebody. There are patterns to be observed, but we have traditionally relied on trying to make sense of these complex patterns in linear or other simple ways. It is not an easy task to try to simplify or visualise complexity, yet when “chaos theory” or “nonlinear dynamics” or the “butterfly effect” are mentioned, most of us recognise this principle but get scared by the maths. Nonlinear probabilities of mineral deposit endowments and other aspects of geological complexity are potentially a major breakthrough in the geosciences (as for astronomy and meteorology). The real challenge is to describe the application of this method in a way that can be understood well enough to gain traction across the geoscience community. So don't miss this week's geohug session with Alison Ord as she guides us through from chaos to prediction.
